Noosa council – it’s up to local community

The future of local government for Noosa would be in the hands of the local community under an LNP State government.

LNP Shadow Minister for Local Government David Gibson said the LNP had put forward a four-point plan to establish a new Noosa Shire Council to members of the Noosa Independence Alliance at a meeting on Monday , 8th August.

 “The LNP believe that local government is about local communities and if Noosa residents overwhelmingly supported the creation of a new Noosa Council, we won’t stand in their way as long as the figures stack up,” Mr Gibson said.

“However ratepayers need to go into it with their eyes open and because the Labor Government has put the budget in a parlous state, the state won’t be in a financial position to pay for de-amalgamation.

 Mr Gibson said the meeting was a successful one, and the Noosa Independence Alliance supported the four point plan put forward at the meeting.

 The LNP’s four point plan for de-amalgamation of Noosa is as follows:

  • Within 100 days of winning government, the LNP would direct a Boundary Commissioner to ‘consider communities’ and boundaries for a new Noosa Shire;
  • Ratepayers of the proposed new local authority will bear the full costs of the de-amalgamation process;
  • The State Government will check the financial modelling put forward by the Noosa Independence Alliance so that if necessary, adjustments can be made to reflect the full cost of the process; and
  • Once the boundaries and the financial position have been identified, residents living within the proposed new council area will, by a simple majority, vote whether or not they wish to establish a new Noosa Shire Council.

Mr Gibson said only the LNP offered residents a simple plan to choose how they were governed and served at local council level.  “It’s up to the people of Noosa and only the LNP is offering them the opportunity to choose, unlike Labor who forced the amalgamations on ratepayers.  “The CanDo LNP team is committed to governing for all Queenslanders, not just ourselves.”
