Glen Emes reminds that forgotten bonds may assist needy familes

Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, is reminding residential tenants and rental property owners to check if they are one of the almost 43,000 people who have forgotten to claim their bond refund.

Mr Elmes said that the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) is holding $9.35 million in forgotten bonds which have accumulated over the past 25 years.

“I want to encourage people who may have forgotten their bond refund to contact the RTA and claim back their bond money to which they are rightfully entitled,” Mr Elmes said.

The Housing Minister, Tim Mander, has announced that under current laws any bond which has been unclaimed for more than seven years may be reinvested into affordable housing for some of Queensland’s most vulnerable people.

“However, tenants and landlords will still retain their right to claim any forgotten bond even after the seven year period has lapsed, Mr Elmes said.

“This is a win-win scenario for everyone and allows the Government to continue delivering on our election promise to revitalize frontline services.”
