Glen Elmes welcomes funding boost for Noosa Jazz Festival 2014

Noosa has received a $25,000 funding boost from the Newman Government to support local events under the latest round of the Events Queensland Regional Development Program (EQRDP).

Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said the Newman Government was proud to continue investing in Noosa as an events destination given its outstanding successes.

“The Newman Government recognises the important role local events play in attracting visitors to regional areas,” Mr Elmes said.

“That is why we want to support events in Noosa.”

He went on to say that the funding would deliver tourism, social and economic benefits to the community.

“Tourism is one of the four pillars of the economy and the Newman Government recognises the importance of events in helping us reach our goal to double annual overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020,” Mr Elmes said.

“It is great to see our local events continuing to being supported by the State Government.”

Events to receive funding include:

  • Noosa Festival of Surfing 2013, Noosa – A week-long family event incorporating amateur and professional Longboard, Stand Up Paddle, Tandem and Finless surfing. Held 10-16 March 2013. Funding amount of $90,000 from 2013-2015 through the Significant Regional Event Scheme.
     
  • Noosa Ultimate Sports Fest, Noosa Heads – A two-day festival offering the ultimate sporting weekend for all ages and abilities including the Blue Water Swim, Noosa Paddle, Noosa Family Ride, Noosa Century Cycle, Noosa Half Marathon, 10km Run and 5km Run or Walk. Held 27-28 April 2013. Funding amount of $15,000
     
  • The Noosa Long Weekend, Noosa – A 10-day arts and cultural festival offering a diverse selection of music, theatre, dance, film, food, forums, literature, visual arts and workshops. Held 14-23 June 2013. Funding amount of $15,000.
     
  • Adventure Race, Noosa – Offering a range of adventure sports for all ages including kayaking, ocean swimming, mountain biking and trail running. Held 10-11 August 2013. Funding amount of $10,000.

Mr Elmes said strong support throughout the region was crucial to the ongoing success of the program.

“These events are delivered in partnership with local communities and that collaborative effort is vital to their success,” he said.

“EQRDP, with the support of bodies including Regional Tourism Organisations, helps deliver tourism benefits and promote regional destinations to a wider audience.

“The latest round of the EQRDP will provide an extra $1.4 million in support across 58 regional events throughout the state ranging from cultural celebrations to triathlons, music festivals, water sports, and food and wine festivals.”

More than $21 million has been invested in 976 events through the Events Queensland Regional Development Program since 2001. The next EQRDP funding round closes 15 February 2013 for events held between 1 October 2013 and 31 March 2015.
