Glen Elmes welcomes funding for Sunshine Coast events

Three Sunshine Coast events will share over $55,000 in grants under the latest round of the Tourism and Events Queensland Regional Development Program.

Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said the funding would further grow Noosa’s diverse events calendar while delivering on the Government’s election promise to grow tourism as one of the four pillars of the economy.

“Tourism and Events Queensland has created the most comprehensive portfolio of supported events of any state in Australia with the Regional Development Program having now invested more than $23.5 million in 1,091 events since the program began in 2001,” Mr Elmes said.

“The latest funding round supports events staged throughout Queensland ranging from music festivals to triathlons, culinary events and cultural celebrations.

“Funding will go towards marketing activities to increase awareness of the event and destination, strategic planning, the engagement of short-term personnel and hire of temporary infrastructure.”

Noosa events supported under Round 26 of the Regional Development Program are:

  • Noosa International Rugby 7’s Festival 2014, Noosa from 4 to 5 October 2014
  • Medibank Wave Warriors Junior Challenge 2014 - Greenmount and Noosa from 4 October 2014 to 22 February 2015
  • Queensland Ocean Swim Series - Noosa, Mooloolaba, Caloundra, Coolangatta from 31 January to 28 March 2015

Mr Elmes said the events join other vibrant Noosa events supported through the Regional Development Program including the Noosa Festival of Surfing and the Noosa Jazz Festival.

“The Government’s 20-year plan for tourism, Destination Success, outlined the need to nurture and support events in Queensland to maximize the benefits and grow regional tourism destinations.

“But I am particularly pleased to see the innovative Noosa Rugby Sevens attract funding this year to assist its growth potential as we head towards the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

The next Regional Development Program funding round will open by 30 June with applications closing on 8 August 2014 for events held between 1 April 2015 and 30 September 2016.
